Over the decades, 8 Northumberland Avenue has transformed from an ambitious Victorian hotel to a modern events destination, blending grand heritage architecture with state-of-the-art technologies.

Grand ambitions
8 Northumberland Avenue began life as a bold idea
At a time when railways and empire flourished, the Northumberland Avenue Hotel Company set out to build a 500-room hotel that would surpass the high standards of discerning Victorian travellers. Known as the Hotel Victoria, the building opened in 1887 with a reputation for going beyond what guests expected. Its design boasted electric lighting, bells with speaking tubes, and hot and cold running water—extraordinary features for the era. However, they planned only four bathrooms for 500 bedrooms, a detail that time would soon need to be corrected.
A period of change
By 1939, the Ministry of War took over the building
Rooms that once hosted grand dinners, including the Ballroom, were repurposed as lecture theatres and storage facilities. The restaurant area, once a social hub, became a computer room used for strategic wartime planning. This era of government utility continued for 70 years, putting the building’s hospitality on hold.
Modern revival
In 2009 Charles Boyd and Adrian Brain—seasoned experts in high-level hospitality—reclaimed the building for events.
They restored it to its former splendour, renaming it 8 Northumberland Avenue, and brought back the historic Ballroom and revived the Old Billiard Room from near-dereliction. Boyds Grill & Wine Bar also opened in what was once the coffee room space, combining vintage chandeliers from 1914 and ornate marble walls with modern décor and technology. All this embodies Charles’ belief that high-quality buildings, art and technology go together beautifully.
