What makes a great exhibition space in London?

Finding the perfect venue space is a key factor when planning any exhibition. A wide open space, plenty of character and of course easy to find are just the starting points and here at 8 Northumberland Avenue we tick all the boxes.

We enjoy turning people’s perceptions on their head, that’s the point of our shows and so we treat the venue in the same way.

Story Events certainly agree as they are hosting their annual London Christmas Party Show here at 8 Northumberland Avenue so we caught up with Managing Director, Sarah Kay, to spill some secrets on her success and why they chose us to host their London Christmas Party Show.

8 Northumberland Avenue: What would you say makes a good exhibition space in London?

Sarah Kay: We feel that it’s about using spaces that are not conventional exhibition spaces as we like the character that comes with the venues that we use. We try hard to not have too busy a show floor as it’s about the exhibitors having a good amount of time to talk to each visitor so providing other rooms is key.

We want the visitors to feel, firstly that the venue is easy to find, and from there that the show is high energy the whole way round so that it’s a good use of their time.

8NA: What would you say are the most crucial considerations when planning an exhibition with so many stands?

8NA: What location considerations do you make when planning both your London exhibitions?

SK: The events industry is busy and we know that our visitors are time poor so we need to make it as easy for them to get there.

"The venue must be in a good location and very easy to find. From extensive research with our visitors this is Central London and being a stone’s throw from a tube is paramount".

8NA: What about the style of the venue?

SK: In terms of style it’s about the exhibitors shining so we can work in a total blank canvas space however we do like to take spaces that are either new to the market or not considered to be exhibition spaces at all and transform them.

We enjoy turning people’s perceptions on their head, that’s the point of our shows and so we treat the venue in the same way.

8NA: What would you say are the most crucial considerations when planning an exhibition with so many stands?

SK: Despite having over 60 exhibitors we’re still considered to be a small exhibition however this is intentional! It’s really important to us that we look after our exhibitors so ensuring that everyone is happy and informed is key as this provides a good platform for them to sell which, after all, is the most important element for them.

We do get lots of questions so we have some excellent FAQ documents and we also do an exhibitor preview evening.

8NA: How do you go about ensuring that all exhibitors get the right amount of coverage in the venues?

SK: As it’s a fairly small show it’s much easier to stand out than it is at some of the larger trade shows, which is why our exhibitors like our event. We also give exhibitors lots of tips on how best to maximise their stands and their time at the show.

The host venue will generally see a great return from the exhibition as whilst they have a stand, it is as if the whole venue is their stand. That must be why we have so many venues offering to host the event each year!

8NA: Do you give your exhibitors any pointers on the kinds of stands that you think will do well or is it entirely up to them?

SK: Definitely! As the years have gone on we have seen the stands get more and more creative which we love however we have always said that it must be obvious as to what you’re selling. Our visitors generally don’t have much time sothey need to be able to clearly see what the stand is about and the service offering.

We also recommend ditching the furniture as whilst exhausting, the sales team being stood makes them more approachable.
